Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
